SNAPSHOT- Dec '20 (Covid-19 edition)

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PAST FEW MONTHS

We have come to the end of what was, in many senses, a challenging year which had all of us modifying our lives in ways that we did not think necessary earlier. At Eternus, too, we had to adapt to what was a new normal in 2020; we only have the Lord to thank for keeping us safe and effective through this process.

School Programme

The schools are still working with online classes and use Google classroom and YouTube platforms to do so. They conducted the Term exams in September. Most of our children have performed well. We do online tuition for Class 11 and 12 students for Accounts, Commerce, Economics for an hour everyday. We connect with the other students regularly over the phone and monitor their lessons.

Discovery classes – our moral values session for the school children – are now held in two batches; on Thursday for the smaller children and on Saturdays for higher class students. In the last few weeks, our topics have been the lives of David, Moses and Nehemiah.

College Programme

We have been conducting Zoom sessions every Sunday afternoon for our college children. Over the past couple of months, we did sessions on Identity, E-mail etiquette, Resume writing, Features of LinkedIn and Discovering Strengths.

We also conduct sessions every Fridays for the final year students. The discussions, so far, covered topics on Marriage, Professionalism in the Workplace and Understanding Leadership. We’ve had a movie review session and also conducted mock Group Discussions and HR Interviews to ready them for their job hunt.

Admissions

Santhosh is a child with a learning difficulty. We had him assessed by a psychologist (working at a school for special kids) who suggested that he would be better off pursuing a vocation based course. So, when he finished his 10th Std. from St. Thomas School, we helped him with his admission at an ITI (Industrial Trade Institute) for Mechanic Autobody Painting. His mother says that he is enjoying the course. We pray that this move turns out well for his future.

Sandhya, who finished her 12th from Anita Methodist School, got admitted for B.Sc Dialysis Technology at the Madras Medical Mission.

Sharmila, who graduated with a BSW this year, got admission to Masters of Social Work at the Patrician College, Chennai.

Placements

Pavithra, III B.Com at WCC, had been interviewed at Tata Consultancy Services in January and finally received her offer letter from the company and joined them in September. She is employed in the Customer Support department. She will undergo training and, based on her performance, they will assign her to a project.

Sadok L., Content writer, Netrocon Digital

He graduated this year from the Madras Christian College with a Bachelors’ degree in Journalism, Sadok had interned, and was later made staff, at a digital marketing firm called Netrocon Digital. He met with our Board Members and gave a small contribution to Eternus; he has committed to giving regular contributions. We praise God for the fruits of what He led us to plant many years ago.

Medical Help – Sharmila’s father

Sharmila’s father (1st year MSW at Patricians) is a watch mechanic and her mother is a maid. Due to an accident, he had multiple fractures and was later diagnosed with kidney stones. Our Board Member, Mr. Ashok Thomas, connected with people in the Ministry of Health and helped him get treated in Stanley Hospital. After few weeks of rest, he is now getting back to shape.

Cyclones season in Chennai

Chennai was hit by a double jeopardy of cyclones - the Nivar hit us between the 23rd & 25th Nov and the Burevi visited on 4th & 5th of December. Since they came with heavy winds and floods, we continuously kept tabs on how our families were doing to see if we needed to render any assistance. Fortunately, only two of the families had issues with flooding in their houses and since it did not cause too much damage, they were able to get back on their feet in a day.

Here's wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful Christmas season and a blessed 2021.

(The chances of it being a better year than this one are extremely good!!)
